SC summons owners of 11 mineral water companies

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Monday summoned owners of 11 mineral water companies in suo motu case pertaining to extracting underground water for sale purpose.

As the hearing went underway, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar warned to put names on Exit Control List if the owners fail to comply with top court’s orders.

The environmental analyst also submitted report on extraction of underground water in Lahore stating that as many as 11 conglomerates are extracting 9 million gallons of underground water every hour from Lahore. The report also states that laboratories of these companies lack equipment to gauge the quality of the water.

Aitzaz Ahsan—legal counsel of bottled water companies—pledged court to adjourn hearing till November 30. To this, the top judge expressed exasperation while remarking that did he [Aitzaz] want him [CJP] to leave for UK after making a compromise. “Should I grant apology to those who made masses drink contaminated water”, remarked the top judge.
