Summary Devolution plan of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has threatened students academic future.

Students and teachers on Wednesday protested in various cities against the devolution of the HEC. A $650 million educational aid for the country is also ceased after the devolution of the body. The HEC was established in 2002 and it played a leading role in producing more than 3,200 PhD scholars between 2002 and 2010, more than the total numbers of PhDs since 1947. During the 56 year period between1947 and 2002 not a single Pakistani university was ranked among the top 300 universities in the world. Today two Pakistani universities are ranked in the list of top 300 universities of the world and few more are about to be included in that list. The HEC spent some Rs 97 billion on education during the last eight years. The educationists believe that devolution of the HEC would be a disastrous move for the country’s education.
