Remembering the rescuer of Urdu, Baba-e-Urdu Moulvi Abdul Haq
The historian, researcher, poet and the writer Moulvi Abdul Haq dedicated all his life for Urdu
(WebDesk/DunyaNews) - The 57th death anniversary of Baba-e-Urdu) Maulvi Abdul Haq was observed on Tuesday. He died on August 16, 1961 after prolonged illness.
The legendary Urdu writer and the linguist, was born in UP in 1870. He acquired his his BA degree from Muslim University Aligarh, UP India.
Baba-e-Urdu was the moving spirit behind the Usmania University Hyderabad, Deccan, where all subjects were taught in Urdu. The textbooks and reference material to be used here were translated and compiled under his supervision.

He was a prolific writer, with almost a dozen titles to his name including the authoritative Standard English-Urdu Dictionary, Chand Ham Asar, maktoobat Baba-e-Urdu Tauqeedat, Muqadimat, etc.
The historian, researcher, poet and the writer Moulvi Abdul Haq dedicated all his life in the service of Urdu and for the promotion of education and language. Baba-e-Urdu believed in the power of language. He believed Urdu is the identification of Muslims of India and Pakistan.
He had served as a translator at the Home Department before being appointed as the provincial Inspector of Schools. This is the same year when he was elected to the office of Secretary, Department of Promotion of Urdu at Delhi All India Muslim Educational Conference.
He had established an alliance of like minded writers and linguists for the promotion of Urdu, Anjuman-e-Taraqi-e-Urdu which later has proven an institution for the forthcoming generations.

After his retirement in 1930, he compiled and edited a comprehensive and authoritative English-Urdu dictionary. Indeed, Urdu to English dictionary was his landmark achievement.
In 1935, He had been given the title of Baba-e-Urdu by a student which became so popular that the nation still remembers him as the Father of Urdu.

After the establishment of Pakistan, he migrated to Pakistan and re-laid the foundation of Anjuman-e-Taraqi-e-Urdu and plunged himself in the services of Urdu. Under his supervision, the Anjuman-e-Taraqqi-e-Urdu emerged as a powerful service organization.
As a researcher, scholar, critic and lexicographer Maulvi Abdul Haq is an unmatched and unparallel name in the history of Urdu and will always be remembered for his great work in the promotion of Urdu, education and Pakistan.
