Imran Ismail would be the 33rd governor of Sindh province

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday decided to appoint Imran Ismail as Sindh governor.

The formal apprval was given by PTI chairman Imran Khan for Ismail s appointment as Sindh governor.

The seat fell vacant after the resignation of former Sindh governor Muhammad Zubair, citing “massive rigging” in the general elections.

Zubair had resigned from the office of the governor on July 28 after the PTI, which is poised to form the next government at the centre after wining the 2018 elections, decided to change the governors in three provinces, including Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Paklhtunkhwa.

"I have served the position as per my constitutional obligations," he added.

As per the Constitution, President Hussain will nominate the new Sindh Governor, Muhammad Zubair remarked.

Imran Ismail

Imran Ismail was born in 1966 in Karachi and received his early education from Cantonment Public School and graduated from Government National College (Karachi).

He ran for the seat of the National Assembly of Pakistan as a candidate of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) from Constituency NA-246 (Karachi-VIII) in by-election held in April 2015 but was unsuccessful. He received 24,821 votes and lost the seat to Kunwar Naveed Jamil.

Ismail, who is considered a close affiliate of Imran, had also won the elections in Sindh Assembly constituency PS-111 Karachi.

Imran Ismail would be the 33rd Sindh governor.

The PTI leader is one of the founding members of Imran Khan’s party. Ever since Khan announced his intentions to challenge the status quo of the country by establishing PTI in 1996, Ismail has been at the forefront of PTI’s politics.

He pursued higher education in leather and chemical technology from Italy and the US. Ismail started his career as a volunteer for Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust and also collected donations for the trust.

Punjab Governor

On the other hand, PTI is also mulling over names of Ishaq Khakwani, Dr Babar Awan, Rai Azizullah and Ejaz Chaudhry for the slot of Punjab governor, sources privy to PTI told Dunya News.

Well-informed sources further added that Jahangir Tareen is lobbying for Ishaq Khakwani as new successor of Rafique Rajwana. On the other hand, Rai Azizullah is trustworthy and reliable aide of PTI supremo and PM-in-waiting Imran Khan.

Chaudhary too is in the race for Punjab governor owing to his services for the party, the sources added.

On the other hand, a faction within PTI desires appointment of Babar Awan as Punjab Governor because of his staunch stance against the opposition.

PTI claims to have secure simple majority after several independent MPAs-elect and Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PML-Q) pledged allegiance to cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan.
