Talal Chaudhry is ineligible to contest elections for the next five years.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Talal Chaudhry has been disqualified for five years in contempt of court case by the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) on Thursday. Chaudhry was convicted of contempt of court and sentenced until the rising of the court. A fine of Rs100,000 was also imposed on him.

A three-judge bench of the court, headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmed, announced a short verdict in the contempt of court case that was reserved on July 11.

They ruled that Talal Chaudhry has been found guilty of contempt of court during speeches at public gatherings and failed to provide evidence against the accusations levellled against him.

Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar had taken a suo motu notice of the former minister’s ‘contemptuous speeches’ against the judiciary on February 1.

A show-cause notice was later issued to him on February 6 directing him to submit reply.

Chaudhry had contested the General Election from NA-102 (Faisalabad-II) but lost to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s Nawab Shair by almost 12,000 votes.

Previously, the apex court had disqualified former minister and PML-N leader Daniyal Aziz for five years in contempt of court case.

Aziz was convicted and sentenced under Article 204 of the Contempt of Court Ordinance, 2003 of the constitution. The court ordered him to be “imprisoned” until the hearing adjourned.

The verdict maintained that Daniyal Aziz humiliated the judiciary and judges. It added that he created hurdles in the provision of justice.

POLITICIANS REACT TO VERDICT AGAINST TALAL

Commenting on the case verdict, Awami Muslim League Leader Sheikh Rashid said that Talal Chaudhry group is responsible for bringing Nawaz Sharif to such state.

“This group is quite immoral and has thinking similar to Nawaz. As Talal has lost in the elections, the disqualification does not matter now. They adopt such tactics to remain in the news,” Rashid said.

On the other hand, PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal refused to give a statement on the conviction and instead said, “The nation is observing everything. Records of rigging were broken in General Elections 2018. The slogan of providing respect to vote has been reinforced."
