From Dunya Election Cell

Due to internal clashes, PML-N, PTI, and PPP remained unable to make an ultimate decision regarding their respective candidates, and this practice kept on till before one day to return the nomination papers. According to details, from the side of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), on June 29, 2018 the last date of returning the nomination papers was announced. Major political parties remained incompetent to conclude their candidates.

PML-N amid internal reshuffle

In various constituencies, substitute candidates, who filed their nomination papers against strong and prominent candidates, did not take their papers back. Similar situation prevails in constituencies of leaders from big parties. Even at this time PML-N could not decide the constituency where Maryam Sharif will be contesting election from. On the same pattern, there is no candidate from NA-184 and NA-186 who is ready to contest. Interestingly, MPA ticketholders have been issued six tickets; two of national assembly and four of provincial one.

In other six constituencies, provincial candidates have been issued the tickets of national assembly.

PTI’s dilemma

On the other side, in PTI’s camps, the situation is quite intricate. Imran Khan decided to contest from five constituencies. From Lahore, it was expected that Khawaja Saad Rafique will be contesting against Imran Khan, but PTI backed down. Its seniors are of the view that soon official declaration with regard to it will be made.

Keeping all things in view, this constituency was having much significance and this was due to the fact that Imran Khan and Khawaja Saad Rafique were supposed to contest from here. According to resources, PTI is unable to decide its candidates from 16 constituencies and the biggest reason for this is the denial of the substitute candidates from these areas to take their nomination papers back.

PTI is trying its best to have the displeased candidates take their nomination papers back. After all efforts are made, it is expected only then the names of final candidates will be publicized.

Grim situation prevailing in PPP

PPP is also facing parallel situation. From its side, neither has any such list been issued nor have the candidates been informed regarding it. According to sources, in last five days, more than sixteen sessions have been held in which candidates met with the leadership of the party in groups. The sources further explain that PPP has failed to decide ultimately the name of candidates from 31 constituencies. Party leaders from Punjab are reserved over awarding the tickets to ex-premier Yousuf Raza Gillani, his children, and other kith and kin.

On the other side, Shaukat Basra, Manzoor Wattoo and Qayyum Jatoi’s son will fight as independent candidates. This is the basic reason for the delay in the issuance of definitive list from PPP.

Internal clashes on the rise

It is a fact that delay in the issuance of final list from parties has been a customary practice in the political history of Pakistan, but this time delay occurred owing to the internal clashes.
