Asghar Khan case: SC expresses resentment over absence of Attorney General

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday summoned Attorney General of Pakistan Ashtar Ausaf in a case pertaining to implementation of verdict in Asghar Khan case.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar heard the case in SC Lahore registry.

During the hearing, deputy attorney general told court that the cabinet has taken a positive decision. “The attorney general will appear before the court and inform about the decision,” he said.

The Chief Justice expressed resentment over the absence of attorney general and remarked, “The hearing of such a significant case is underway but he is not concerned. Is this the performance of attorney general’s office?”

"The attorney geenral should appear before the court tomorrow," directed the chief justice.

“The cabinet has not taken any effective decision. They just got rid of the matter by forming a committee. The case is pending for past several years. Is this how the cabinet works?” remarked the CJP.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi chaired the farewell meeting of the federal cabinet at the PM’s office during which the Supreme Court’s instructions in Asghar Khan case were reviewed.

On the instructions of the apex court, the federal cabinet directed the investigation and prosecution agencies to act according to law in Asghar Khan case.

On the other hand, FIA committee formed in the case has decided to summon all concerned persons including Nawaz Sharif.

Sources said that the FIA committee has broaden its scope of investigation to look into allegations that large amount of money was allegedly distributed among the politicians to create the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) and stop Benazir Bhutto’s PPP from coming to power in the 1990 elections.

Former secretary defence Roedad Khan also appeared before the FIA team. He was directed to bring along with him all record related to Asghar Khan case.
