(Dunya News) - The courageous women drivers of Thar have taken up the driving seats of dumpers of a coal-based power project in the area.

Present at the event to witness this was Pakistan Peoples Party’s chairman Bilawal Bhutto, who was exuberant to see the confidence exhibited by the women drivers, driving dumpers all across the desert of Thar.

The area of Islam Kot located in Thar now houses a coal power project that includes women drivers who not only would work to end the acute power shortage in Thar, but also in Pakistan.

“Women can do everything. If they can do household chores, they can also drive dumpers,” said one of the women drivers.

Employed on Rs 25,000 salary, the same as their husband or brother employed in the project, the aim is to provide self-sustenance to the local women, and to portray a positive image of Pakistan says the project coordinator.

By the end of the year, the Thar coal project is expected to produce electricity – something in which the Thari women would have played a role.
