LAHORE (Dunya News) -Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday dismissed the plea challenging Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) intra-party elections.
The petition was filed by, Yousuf Ali, a former general secretary of the PTI’s Swabi chapter, asking the commission to declare the election null and void on the grounds that the polling process had violated the party’s constitution.
A five-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan conducted the hearing and initially reserved the verdict.
PTI submitted records of its intra-party elections according to which at least 2,56,997 votes were cast whereas the total number of PTI voters stand at 17 lac.
PTI lawyer maintained that ECP can verify the reply submitted by the party.
The petitioner’s lawyer demanded the details of intra-party elections. PTI’s lawyer argued the ECP cannot provide the reply to the other party as it will violate the sanctity of vote.
He said that providing the record will also reveal the voter’s contact number and details. The lawyer insisted that ECP can itself probe the process.
