Summary Substandard, unregistered and expired stents were used in surgeries.
ISLAMABAD (Daily Dunya) - It was revealed during sitting of senate standing committee on national health services and regulations that authorities concerned had registered companied involved in provision of substandard stents.
Senator Sajjad Hussain Turi chaired session of senate committee for national health services and regulations in parliament house on Friday.
Federal Investigation Agency’s report stated that substandard, unregistered and expired stents were used in surgeries whereas cheaper stents were sold at relatively high price.
Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) Chief Executive officer Aslam Afghani informed committee that at present DRAP had registered a total of 55 companies for provision of stents.
Directives have been issued to provinces for initiating action against companies being involved in stent scam, pronounced Afghani.
Afghani further informed committee about absence of mechanism pertaining to stents’ price control mechanism.
Price of stents have not been controlled since 2011 whereas price policy is being prepared with collaboration of all stake holders.
The Senate Standing Committee on National Health has asked the people to register any complaint regarding stents used in heart surgery on the Senate s website, as the committee would take strict action against the doctor concerned through the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).
