LAHORE (Web Desk) – Production of banned shopping bags, made of plastic, could not be halted despite reservations of bodies that are concerned with protection of environment and legislation done by the government.

It was reported in Roznama Dunya that according to a survey done few years ago, around 200 production sites were functional in the country and the number has increased with the passage of time.

Production and import of shopping bags that are either thinner than 15 micron or are black in colour were banned earlier but implementation remains a job to be done by the authorities concerned.

Reportedly, shopping bags that are black in colour contain harmful components as additional colours are added during recycling.

Besides the alleged harmful components, security personnel in different cities who have to remain alert over constant threats of terror attacks will be benefitted if the ban is implemented as such shopping bags aid terrorists in carrying explosives.

Shopkeepers and fruit vendors who pack groceries in black polythene bags or those that are thinner than 15 micron can be jailed for three months and fined up to Rs 50,000.
