Summary Awam Express collided with a freight train in Multan on Thursday claiming six lives

MULTAN (Dunya News) – First Information Report of Awam Express accident has been filed in City Shujabad Police Station on Friday after six lives were lost and over 92 passengers wounded in collision with a freight train yesterday.



In-charge guard, Nisar Ahmad became complainant in the case which was lodged under Railways Act-9. Driver of the ill-fated train, Rauf Shamoon and Assistant Driver, Asghar are to be interrogated while statements of eye-witnesses and survivors will be recorded.

On the other hand,  passengers of the train reached the Karachi cantonment station, which was bustling with anxious families at around 05:00 in the morning today, using an alternate train which was provided to them.

While talking to the media after arrival, different passengers held the driver of the train responsible for the accident in which four bogies went off the track due to high speed near Sher Shah Junction on Thursday morning in Multan at Sher Shah Junction.

It was reported that the situation developed 15 minutes after Awam Express that was bound for Karachi from Peshawar left Bucch Station in Multan.

Purportedly, the freight train was instructed to halt its movement after a man jumped in front of it and committed suicide which coincided with the time Awam Express was supposed to use the junction.

In the aftermath, the Chief Executive Officer of Pakistan Railways, Javed Anwar said that a committee was formed to probe the accident. While talking to the media in Lahore, he said that one track was reopened for traffic and repair work was underway on the affected track.

On the other hand, premier and different lawmakers expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and Railways Minister, Khawaja Saad Rafique asserted that whoever was responsible for negligence leading to the accident would be brought to justice.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, in a statement issued in this regard, expressed deep grief over loss of precious human lives and extended sympathies to the bereaved families.
