Punjab opposition rejects judicial commission tasked to probe Panama leaks

Summary Mehmoodur Rasheed has demanded Nawaz Sharif to hand over his resignation

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Judicial commission pertaining to probe of Panama leaks, announced by Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif has been rejected by the opposition in Punjab Assembly, Dunya News reported Wednesday.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Mehmoodur Rasheed moved a resolution in connection with the recent uproar in country over alleged offshore dealings of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s family.

Rasheed said that an unbiased probe requires in-service judges of the Supreme Court (SC) and not retired.

He demanded Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to appear before the commission after handing over his resignation.

Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister had addressed the nation over a television broadcast. He had announced formation of a judicial commission to probe the sensational leaks by Panama Papers that tangled Sharif family among 140 world leaders.

Documents of Panama-based law firm pertaining to concealed offshore companies of notable personalities from around the world were leaked.

The Prime Minister had addressed the nation in attempt to take the people in confidence over the controversy.

It should be noted here that Icelandic Prime Minister has moved his resignation after one third of the population protested against him for making use of tax havens.
