Summary Political finance wing will probe into the claims made by Panama Papers, says ECP Secretary.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday is waiting for the approval of Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms’ approval to start investigation of politicians’ assets after Panama Papers exposed massive leak.
The ECP Secretary Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad while talking to media in Islamabad stated political finance wing will probe into the claims made by Panama Papers about Pakistani politicians including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s family.
However, the political finance wing is lacking a proper law that gives full freedom to inspect assets of leaders.
ECP Secretary said that they are only waiting for the green signal from electoral reforms committee after which they will officially launch action.
Earlier, a massive leak of 11.5 million documents had exposed secret offshore dealings of celebrities and world leaders.
The report revealed that Hussain and Hasan Nawaz Sharif, and Mariam Safdar, the sons and daughter of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, set up at least four offshore companies in British Virgin Islands (BVI). These companies owned at least six upmarket properties overlooking London‘s Hyde Park.
Thousands of Mossack Fonseca (MF) documents reviewed and subsequent enquiries reveal that the Sharif family mortgaged four of these properties to the Deutsche Bank (Suisse) SA for a loan of GBP 7 million and the Bank of Scotland part financed the purchase of two other apartments.
Talking to a private television channel, Hussain said that his family had done "nothing wrong". "Those apartments are ours and those offshore companies are also ours," he said.
