Summary The bill aims to turn PIA into a public limited company in order to make it a profitable entity.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The National Assembly session will be held today (Monday) at the Parliament House in Islamabad at 3pm.
According to the agenda of the day, the government will present a motion before the House asking that Pakistan International Airlines (Conversion) Bill may be referred to the joint sitting of the Parliament for consideration and passage.
For this purpose, National Assembly session will take place at first in which Ministry for Parliamentary Affairs will present a resolution for forwarding the PIA privatization bill to parliament’s joint session.
After the resolution is passed in the assembly, the joint session will be summoned immediately.
The bill is aimed at turning the PIA into a public limited company in order to make it a profitable entity.
This move is being seen as a new strategy devised by the government to approve the bill after it was rejected by the Senate a week ago.
Deputy Chairman of the Senate Abdul Ghafoor Haideri sought verbal consent twice, but was rejected by majority voice both the times.
The bill is expected to pass since Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) exercises an easy majority in the joint session of the Parliament.
In early February, rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons were used as law enforcers engaged in an attempt to deter the protest of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) employees against the privatization of the national carrier.
Besides question hour and legislative business, the lower house will also debate important national issues whereas other delayed bills are also likely to be approved in the session.
