KARACHI (Web Desk) – Security guard of a private school pointed gun at polio vaccination team to stop them from vaccinating students in North Nazimabad’s L-Block in Karachi on Tuesday, Dunya News reported.

Central District’s Deputy Commissioner Fariduddin arrived at the scene and detained the security guard after registering a case against him.

Later, the school administration was convinced to allow the polio team to administer polio drops to children.

The Deputy Commissioner has urged all the private schools to cooperate with polio teams.

According to Sindh Health Department, polio campaign is underway in Karachi, Hyderabad, Benazirabad, Larkana and Sukkur divisin. More than 2.1 million children will be inoculated against the disease in Karachi alone.

Pakistan is one of three countries in the world where polio is endemic, and the attacks on polio teams have hindered vaccination campaigns.

Some people are also suspicious about the vaccinations, fearing it will sterilize their children.

The virus is most prevalent in the country’s restive northwest. A fresh immunisation drive began on Monday aimed at vaccinating children across Pakistan.

The highly infectious disease affects mainly the under-fives and can cause paralysis in a matter of hours. Some cases can be fatal.
