Summary PM Secretariat spied on by embassies in Diplomatic Enclave, claims British media

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister (PM) Secretariat and sensitive buildings in its vicinity are allegedly not safe owing to ‘spy signals’ propelled from the Diplomatic Enclave, Dunya News reported Tuesday.

According to a British paper, some embassies remain aware of the talks happening in different sensitive buildings especially Prime Minister Secretariat.

Former interior minister Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Rehman Malik had stated earlier that a cabinet meeting was postponed in 2012 due to spying tactics used by foreign embassies in the enclave.

In June 2015, Malik had talked about phone-tapping of important personalities and offices’ bugging.

Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director General (DG) Aftab Sultan is to brief Senate’s standing committee on Interior over the issue. The bureau chief will inform the committee over different gadgets and modern equipment used for spying.

Col Tahir Hussain Mashhadi, member of the standing committee is likely to discuss alleged phone-tapping of former finance minister Salim Mandviwala by the Intelligence Bureau. Mandviwala had accused the IB of tapping his mobile phone last year to which the bureau’s chief had responded in negation and stated that they do not spy in politicians and parliamentarians.

Former finance minister Dr Mubashar Hassan had stated in an interview two years ago that noosed prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto encountered the issue as well during his tenure.

According to the ex-finance minister, late Bhutto used to take a walk in the PM Secretariat’s lawn, away from prying ears to discuss key matters.
