Summary Eye-witnesses accounts say the men stopped as asked but the police still opened fire
KARACHI (Dunya News) – At least two persons were wounded after the police opened fire on citizens in an alleged police encounter on Wednesday, Dunya News reported.
The high level officials of the police have jumped the guns in defense of their ‘cop brothers’ as they tried to justify the shootout.
Exhibiting blatant disregard of the law, the police in Karachi engaged in another apparently staged police encounter which resulted in critical injury of two young men.
According to details, the police indicated two individuals to stop at a check-post installed at Mira Naka. As per the eye-witnesses accounts, the men stopped as asked but the police still went ahead and opened fire.
The wounded men were rushed to Jinnah Hospital where they are being treated. One wounded man Zakir says the police opened fire in spite of him stopping when asked. He said he is being pressured by the high-ups to issue statement of their stance.
The other wounded man Farid’s family is also pleading for justice. They say the wounded man is a driver at a private company and Zakir is his helper.
The eye-witnesses have made cracking of the case even easier. They have categorically stated the police opened fire without any threat from the men they asked to stop.
To cover up, the police have charged wounded men with armed robbery and possession of illegal weapons
Superintendent of Police (SP) SITE has jumped the guns in defense of the out-of-line cops and has insisted on the validity of the ‘encounter’.
The incident has once again raised several questions on the legitimacy of the police encounters, blatant disregard of law and aggressive attitude of the police towards the citizens.
