WASHINGTON (Web Desk) - The United States strongly condemns Wednesday s attack on Bacha Khan University in Charsadda.

Armed militants stormed Bacha Khan University in Charsadda, killing at least 21 people and wounding dozens a little more than a year after the massacre of 134 students at a school in the area.

A senior Tehreek-e-Taliban commander claimed responsibility for the assault in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, but an official spokesman later denied involvement, calling the attack "un-Islamic".

The violence nevertheless shows that militants retain the ability to launch attacks, despite a country-wide anti-terrorism crackdown and a military campaign against their strongholds along the lawless border with Afghanistan.

"We offer our deepest condolences to the victims and their families during this time of grief. It is particularly appalling that these terrorists continue to attack educational institutions, targeting Pakistan‘s future generations," US Deputy Department Spokesperson Mark Toner said.

He said the United States stands with the government and people of Pakistan and their efforts to create a secure, stable, and prosperous country.

"We will stand side-by-side with Pakistan in its fight against terrorism," he added.
