Quetta (Dunya News) – Two terrorists linked to a banned organization were arrested on Tuesday during a Frontier Constabulary (FC) and intelligence department joint operation in Turbat. Ammunition was also recovered from the terrorists.

The Balochistan province has long been rocked by sectarian violence and remains in a perpetual state of instability due to attacks by banned separatist organizations along with threats of extremism.

There was a lull in attacks earlier this year after the Pakistani military launched a major offensive against militants across the country, blocking their sources of movement, communication and funding. In July the leader of a militant group responsible for the country s worst sectarian atrocities was killed in a shoot-out with police, along with 13 other militants.

Militants lay down arms

Earlier this year, a group of 42 militants including key commanders belonging to a banned organization surrendered and pledged their allegiance to the country. According to the Frontier Constabulary (FC) spokesperson, the militants who were part of a banned outfit in Turbat for many years laid down their weapons before Commissioner Makran and Commandant Makran Scouts.

The surrendering militants will receive Rs 0.5 million to Rs 1.5 million each other than education, health and other facilities for their children under the Pur Aman (peaceful) Balochistan Programme.

Similarly, around 400 rebel commanders from various areas of Balochistan also surrendered on the occasion of Independence Day.

Sectarian violence

Quetta was gripped in terror once again earlier this month as individuals of the Hazara community were attacked. The incident took place on Spini Road as they were travelling from the city centre of the provincial Quetta city to their home in the suburban Hazara town. The victims have identified as Izzatullah and Muhammad Hassan.

A senior police official Abdul Waheed Khattak confirmed the incident and said it mirrored similar shootings earlier this week.

"Two Hazara brothers were fired at on Friday near the same locality of Hazara town and one of them was killed while another is seriously injured.

Provincial home secretary Akbar Durrani said authorities were concerned about the spate of attacks that appear to be targeting the Hazaras.

Meanwhile on the same day, suspects on a motorcycle opened indiscriminate fire as traders were closing their shops to return home on Patel Road. The firing killed an individual identified as Shamsullah and injured five others. The wounded have been identified as Naseebullah, Gul Rehman, Jabbar, Asadullah and Abdul Majeed.

In a similar incident at Gawalmandi, assailants shot dead an individual.
