Parliament convenes session for Speaker's election

Summary Different political parties, including PPP, JUI (F), PML-F and ANP are in Sadiq's favour

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Election of National Assembly (NA) Speaker is being held on Monday where Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Ayaz Sadiq and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Shafqat Mehmood are contesting.

Different political parties including Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) have announced their support for Sadiq. Earlier on Sunday, Sadiq filed nomination papers for the election.

PTI’s Mahmood and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) candidate Dr. G. G. Jamal had also submitted their nomination papers in this regard. However, Jamal pledged his support to Sadiq later on.

Talking to newsmen after filing his nomination papers outside Parliament House, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq thanked Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif and the party leadership for nominating him again as PML-N candidate.

He said different political parties, including PPP, JUI (F), PML-F and ANP have assured him to cast votes in his favour. He stated that he is meeting different political parties and political leaders to seek their support.

On November 6, NA former speaker Ayaz Sadiq was sworn in as Member of National Assembly (MNA) among four elected members.

Sadiq was sworn in among Riazul Haq Juj, Babar Nawaz Khan and Dr Shazia Soomro while five are yet to be administered. MQM also returned to the Parliament after 85 days since it handed in its resignations on the 12th of August. MQM decided to take back resignations from Sindh Assembly as well.

Former speaker, Sadiq was deseated by election tribunal after NA-122 constituency results were challenged by PTI. However, Sadiq took lead in the re-election and PTI s Aleem Khan accepted his defeat.
