Summary Senator Kaine said the terrorist organiztions are now feeling tough pressure from the government.
WASHINGTON (Web Desk) – A top UN senator has said that Pakistan is now sincerely acting against terrorists in North Waziristan and other areas, the Radio Pakistan reported on Monday.
Tim Kaine, an influential Democratic Senator in the two power Senate committees of foreign relations and armed service, said Pakistan under Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is moving away from terrorism as a result of effective actions against terrorists.
He said the directional change came after the 2013 elections, which brought a new democratic set-up in the country.
Senator Kaine said the terrorist organiztions are now feeling tough pressure from the government.
The remarks by the senator came few days after his meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the US Capital.
Overall levels of militancy-linked violence have dropped dramatically this year, with 2015 on course for the fewest deaths among civilian and security forces since 2007 -- the year the Tehreek-e-Taliban umbrella group was formed.
Pakistan s militancy began after the US-led invasion of neighbouring Afghanistan in 2001, which led to a spillover of militants across the border and a surge in recruitment for militant groups.
Since June 2014, Pak Army has been engaged in a full-scaled offensive in North Waziristan, a restive tribal area along the Afghanistan border.
The army says it has killed more than 3,000 militants so far in the operation. The region was once considered to be the headquarters of the Tehreek-e-Taliban, which has been targeting security forces and public places in an effort to topple the elected government.
