Summary Nawaz Sharif took notice of food shortage in war-torn city of Afghanistan.
ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday took notice of the food shortage faced by returning residents in Afghanistan’s Kunduz city and directed the Foreign Office to arrange transportation of a plane-load of wheat stock.
This measure is being taken as a goodwill gesture on behalf of the people and Government of Pakistan for the returning residents of Kunduz facing severe food shortage after Taliban retreat, the Radio Pakistan reported.
The Taliban have been fighting to regain power since being toppled by a U.S.-led intervention in 2001.
The once-quiet north of Afghanistan has seen escalating violence in recent years as the insurgency spread, and swathes of Kunduz province have repeatedly come under siege this year.
Thousands fled Kunduz due to fighting between the Taliban and the Afghan security forces after the Taliban overrun the city on September 28.
The city was retaken by the Afghan forces after a 10-day fighting. The U.S.-led forces also used aerial power to help the Afghan forces enter the strategically important city.
