Summary So far, 54 death row inmates have been hanged since December.
LAHORE (Web Desk) – Pakistani authorities hanged another six death row convicts on Wednesday, bringing the number of executions to 54 since an unofficial moratorium on capital punishment was lifted in December.
Prisoner Ayub was executed in Kot Lakhpat Jail Lahore. He was sentenced to death by a court in Sheikhupura.
Death row inmate Ghulam Yaseen was hanged in New Central Jail in Bahawalpur. The convict who belonged to Chani Goth area was handed death penalty by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) for murdering a woman in 2002.
Another prisoner Shahbaz was executed in the central jail for murdering a person in 1998. Meanwhile, prisoner Jaffar Khan’s executed was deferred for several days on the complainant’s request.
In Mianwali Cnetral Jail, death row convict Muhammad Khan, who was involved in a murder in 2001, was sent to the gallows.
Moreover, prisoner Habdar Shah’s executed was stopped after heirs of the victim pardoned him.
Another two prisoners including Abdul Razzaq Chohan and Jalil alias Jalal Morijo were hanged in Sukkur Central Jail.
Jalal had killed his relative Haroon Morijo over an old enmity in Padidan town of Naushahro Feroze district in 1997. He was awarded death sentence by the additional session judge in 2000. Second prisoner Abdul Razzaq was sentenced to death by the additional session judge in Sukkur for slaughtering 7th grade student Aftab Mirani in Bachal Shah Miyani area in 2000.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted the moratorium on Dec. 17, a day after Taliban gunmen attacked a school and killed 134 students and 19 adults. The killings put pressure the government to do more to tackle the insurgency.
At first, the government said only militants would be executed. But later it emerged that officials had quietly widened the policy for all prisoners on death row whose appeals had been rejected.
The Interior Ministry is reviewing the cases of hundreds more whose appeals have been exhausted. There are more than 8,000 prisoners on death row.
