Cyclone Phet: Torrential rains paralyzes life in Karachi
Torrential rains along with stormy winds lashed Karachi leaving many people critically injured and flooding almost every road in metropolis and put life to a grinding halt. Cyclone Phet is just 100 km away from Karachi and would likely to hit the coast sometime in the evening today. Many vehicles have turned out of order on roads while main and sub roads are submerged under thick stagnant water, meanwhile; officials from provincial government have kicked off no rescue efforts as yet. Some accidents were also reported to have occurred due to slippery roads where motorcycle riders lost control over bikes and sustained injuries, sources told media. The city is already covered under darkness for last several hours due to massive power shutdown as all electricity generation units at Bin Qasim Power Plant have gone tripped for last some hours, sources said. Meanwhile, more than 250 feeders have also gone tripped, cutting short of electricity supply to many areas. Rain also disrupted railway system completely. Cyclone Phet, which is just 250kms away from Karachi, inundated 40 villages of Gwadar while the affected people have been shifted to the safer places. The cyclone was moving toward Pakistan at a speed of 12km/hr and currently at a distance of 330km from Karachi. A total of 370-millimeter rain was recorded in Gwadar, Pasni and other adjoining areas. Gwadar and Pasnis road link to other areas has been disconnected as the coastal highway has been submerged under water. Gwadar has been partially flooded due to incessant torrential rains being caused by Cyclone Phet. Emergency has been imposed in the area to minimize the damage. Water has engulfed 5km area in Badin while rains are continued in Lasbella, Thatta and Gwadar inundating many areas.Six people have also been died in different areas due to heavy downpour, whereas some 20 launches got destroyed in Gawadar and 600 houses destroyed in Raheela.
