KARACHI (Web Desk) – Two top political parties including Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) have started lobbying for the Senate chairman post and both parties are in the process of winning over the most allies for their support.
PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari has summoned a meeting of the allied parties today (Monday) as his party has given green signal to Raza Rabbani for the Senate chairmanship.
Members of MQM, JUI, ANP, PML-Q, Functional League and FATA have been invited to the meeting.
Earlier, Asif Zardari held a telephonic conversation with Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain and discussed post-Senate election situation with him.
The PPP leader also stressed upon political reconciliation and cooperation.
Altaf Hussain was of the view that political parties should respect each other’s mandate.
On the other hand, the PPP has also sought the support of Jamat-e-Islami (JI) and Jamiate Ulema-e-Islam (JUI).
The PPP meeting comes few days after elections were held for 104 seats of the Upper House of Parliament. During the polls, the ruling PML-N and main opposition PPP got almost equal representation in the Senate over the next three years.
PPP is top party in the Senate with 27 seats while the PML-N has 26 senators. The Senate at the moment comprises 100 members.
Polls for four seats in the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA) were postponed due to legal and constitutional complications and new date for election will be announced later.
