Summary
Water is rising rapidly and crossed dangerous level in Attabad Lake. The lake was formed after a landslide and now is on the verge of breaking its banks. The landslide caused debris to block the River Hunza, which in turn prevented water from flowing downstream and created what is now referred to as Attabad lake. Officials have placed danger markings near the banks of river Indus.Experts believe that the lake is now 30km wide. The height of the lake is increasing by 3.5 feet per day. The Gilgit government has installed cameras in the area to warn residents of low lying areas in case of any emergency situation through beepers and sirens. Water of Attabad Lake has started inundating Gilmit after Shishkit and Aaen areas of Hunza. FWO has prepared a spillway which is 20 km away from the lake. Officials claim that the water would start flowing from the spillway within the next 48 hours thereby reducing the pressure on the natural barrage of the lake.
