Summary Performance of the judiciary as important as its independence, says Nawaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday in Islamabad expressed the fact he was not satisfied with the workings of the current judiciary. He said that if the judiciary was performing its duties well and its working was up to expectations, there wouldn’t have been any need for military courts.

According to the details, Prime Minister Sharif met a delegation of traders in Islamabad. He expressed his displeasure over the workings of the current judiciary on this occasion. He said he had complete faith in democracy. He stated that the military courts were not established by any military administrator, but by a democratic government. He himself was not in favor of the establishment of military courts, but upon critically analyzing the current situation of the judiciary, he had no option but to opt for that measure.

He stated that the performance of the judiciary was as important as its independence. PM Sharif also said that the military courts will hear the cases of Karachi as well. The case of killing of mountaineers in northern region of Pakistan and the case of attack on Malala Yousafzai by terrorists will also be opened in the military courts.

The government of Pakistan earlier in January made amendments in the constitution for the establishment of military courts in renewed efforts to curb terrorism. These drastic actions were taken after the deadly Peshawar attack on the Army Public School. The amendments were met with opposition from major political parties, but nonetheless were approved by the Senate and the National Assembly.
