ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The National Assembly on Tuesday has given its approval for the 21st constitutional Amendment and Amendment in the Army Act 1952. The political leadership is united in the national action plan formulated to fight against terrorism. Sheikh Rasheed, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) were absent during the poll as the meeting proceeded under Speaker National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq.

The National Assembly meeting was started by speaker Ayaz Sadiq after which the Federal Minister for Law Pervaiz Rasheed asked the speaker to review the 21st constitutional Amendment which was approved.

After reviewing the constitutional Amendment, Rasheed asked for the permission to present the bill of 21st Amendment. The permission was granted by Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and the bill then presented by Rasheed. The session then reviewed the Amendments clause-wise and approved the Amendments.

245 members voted in favor of the first clause with no opposition from any member. JI’s suggestion for amendments in the first clause was not entertained.

242 members of the National Assembly approved the second clause of the 21st Amendment with no opposition from any member. 243 members voted in favor of the third clause after which the approval for the 21st Amendment proceeded by ringing of the bells and votes were cast by process of division.

The members then walked out of the assembly as the votes were being counted. Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq announced the approval of the constitutional amendment by 247 votes with no opposition coming from any member regarding the approval. Members of the National Assembly congratulated Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif on this event.

The bills were also presented in the Senate meeting. The Senate gave its approval for Amendments in the Army Act during which 78 members out of 104 were present. All members voted in favor of the bill for Amendments in the Army Act.

The Senate comprises of 104 members out of whom 6 are members of the JUI-F. When the Amendments bill were presented, 78 members of the Senate were present in the house. A united consensus was reached on the bill for Army Act Amendment while according to the chairman of the senate, 77 members voted in favor of the Amendment with no vote against the bill.

After being approved by the National Assembly and the Senate the approved bills will be sent to the President for his approval. These amendments will then become part of the Constitution.
