Peace committee urges Taliban to constitute body for talks

Summary Says the committee sincerely wants that there should be no delay in initiating the dialogue.

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - Four-member dialogue committee has urged Taliban to complete their consultation process at the earliest and constitute a negotiating team for talks.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Irfan Siddiqui told newsmen that this is the first message from the Committee. The committee held three sessions to discuss various issues regarding dialogue.

He said the committee members sincerely want that there should be no delay in initiating the dialogue. He said the committee is waiting for a response from Taliban for a mechanism to proceed further.

The committee also asked both the government and Taliban not to make any statement that could vitiate atmosphere for the dialogue.

To a question‚ Irfan Siddiqui said if Taliban constitute a committee then we will go for talks and decide the agenda.

Earlier‚ the members of the committee had 45-minute meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who thanked the members for accepting the challenge. The members also thanked the PM for reposing confidence in them.

The PM briefed the committee about efforts made by the government for dialogue process.

Mian Nawaz Sharif said committee has full mandate to hold talks with Taliban and there would be no obstacle in this regard.

Nawaz said if the committee so desires he can spare one hour daily for its members. The members can contact him anytime and he will be ready to meet them anywhere.

Prayers were also offered on the occasion for success of the dialogue process.

In the second meeting‚ Interior Minister Ch. Nisar Ali Khan also briefed the Committee about efforts so far made for dialogue and related issues.
Then the member held another meeting to discuss how to proceed further.
