RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) – The anti-terrorism unit has warned authorities that a group of militants plan to carry out attack on Adiala jail Rawalpindi following the brazen overnight attack on the central jail in Dera Ismail Khan.

A letter written to Punjab IG police stated that some prisoners were suspected to have been in touch with the militants by mobile phones provided by sympathetic wardens.

The anti-terrorism unit further said that more than 250 sims were being used by a cell phone owned by a jail warden in a month.

The unit suggested that the use of mobile phones should be banned within a period of one month to avoid any untoward incident.

It also suggested to change the direction of communication towers, built within the premises of Adiala jail.

It will cost approximately five million rupees if jammers were installed in Adiala jail to halt the use of cellular services, the unit added.

Dozens of heavily-armed Pakistani Taliban insurgents freed nearly 175 inmates, including 35 ‘high-profile militants’, during a brazen overnight attack on the central jail in Dera Ismail Khan on Tuesday.

At least nine people, including four policemen and five militants, were killed in the attack and the following shootout, said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Shaukat Yousufzai.

KP chief minister Pervaiz Khattak termed the brazen attack a failure on the part of the intelligence agencies, and has vowed to punish those found guilty of negligence.

The heavily armed militants had attacked the prison from different sides around midnight. Armed with guns, mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and bombs, the militants dressed in police uniforms bombarded the prison before escaping with scores of inmates after a three-hour shootout.

Meanwhile, the case of the jailbreak was registered against the unidentified attackers in the Chaowni Police Station.
Repair work was also kicked off at the Dera Ismail Khan Central Prison.
