Power tariff will be further increased by 13 percent from January 1, 2010. This time subsidy for the farmers has also been revoked while the new tariff will be applicable to the lifeline consumer who uses upto 50 units of electricity, reported Dunya News on Monday. According to October 1, 2009 notification of 6 percent increase in power tariff, lifeline consumers were exempted while agricultural consumers were given subsidy. However, the ministry of water and power has burdened the lifeline consumers this time and it is also considering to repeal subsidy for the farmers. The amendment notification of rise in tariff is expected to be issued in next 48 hours. The electricity tariff will be increased by 13 percent in January under the conditions of IMF. The power tariff will be increased by 25 percent collectively by March 2010.
