Won't allow anyone to derail democracy, says PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Parvez Ashraf on Wednesday stated that anti-democratic and anti-state elements will not be allowed to derail the democratic setup in the country.

 

In his opening remarks at the cabinet meeting‚ PM Ashraf said while the government is sincerely engaged in the efforts to strengthen democracy‚ some anti-democratic and anti-state elements are also busy in creating situations that are not only detrimental to democracy but also to economic growth and stability of the country.

 

The prime minister said the demand to dissolve the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was unconstitutional, adding that neither the chief election commissioner, nor any member of the ECP could be removed in an unconstitutional manner.

 

Raja Pervez Ashraf said the government committed to hold free‚ fair and transparent elections in accordance with the provisions of the constitution.

 

Caretaker setup at the centre and the provinces would be formed after consultation with all the stakeholders.

 

He said sustained political stability is a pre-requisite for achievement of economic well being of the country.

 

On the other hand, the cabinet today is expected to approve strategic trade policy framework 2012-15 and Ombudsmen Institutional Reforms Bill 2013.

 

The meeting is discussing overall economic situation and prices of essential commodities.

 

The cabinet will also review implementation status of its earlier decisions.
