ISLAMABAD: Hydropower generation was reduced by more than 5,000mw due to closure  of canals  for annual cleaning and maintenance, an NTDC official said.

During the mandatory canal closure, electricity generation from hydropower sources drops to an average of 700mw from its maximum capacity of about 6,700mw.

Due to low power generation by hydropower units, the electricity shortfall in the country on Friday reached 5,600 megawatts (MW).

Currently, loadshedding is taking place for 10-12 hours in urban areas and up to 16 hours in rural areas.
