Summary Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmood on Tuesday took oath as Governor Punjab.

 

LAHORE: Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmood on Tuesday took oath as Governor Punjab on Tuesday when Chief Justice Lahore High Court Umar Ata Bandial administered the oath to Mahmood.


Governor Punjab also refused to take salary and special arrears.


Representatives of different political parties, retired and on-duty officers, foreign ambassadors also participated in the ceremony.


PML-N likeminded leader Hamayun Akhtar, PPP Punjab president Manzoor Khan Watto, Speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Iqbal, law minister Rana Sanaullah, Opposition leader Raja Riaz, IG Punjab Haji Habibur Rehman, Tanveer Ashraf Qaira, Abdulqadir Gilani and JI’s Dr Waseem Akhtar were also present.


The newly elected governor warmly welcomed the chief minister Shahbaz Sharif and discussed current national and regional issues.


While expressing his notions, the governor he would try his best to meet great expectations of the president, adding that he would also stand by the Punjab government for good governance.


He also said that Dr Tahir Qadri should not put his followers on trial with tough agenda.

 

Earlier last week, President Asif Ali Zardari had offered the post of Punjab governor to Mahmood, formerly the provincial president of the Pakistan Muslim League – Functional, and the offer had been accepted.


“President Zardari today offered me Punjab governorship which I have accepted,” Mahmood told Dunya News.
A source also said that President Zardari wanted a man like Mahmood in Punjab because of his ‘good relations’ with PML-N leaders.


Mahmood replaced Sardar Latif Khosa who had been appointed Punjab governor on Jan 13, 2011.
