Summary National Judicial Policy Making Committee deferred decision on holding elections under judiciary.

The National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC) met under the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in Supreme Court Lahore Registry Saturday to deliberate over Chief Election Commission (CEC) request seeking permission for holding upcoming general elections under judiciary.The CEC also requested the committee to review the policy that members of judiciary would not become part of the elections because of allegations of rigging in polls.On conclusion of the meeting Dr Faqir Hussain, registrar SC told media that during the meeting members of the committee had raised certain points on the CEC request for holding elections under the aegis of judiciary. Meeting of the committee will be reconvened on receipt of clarification from CEC on these points and then any decision will be taken on CEC request, he added.Earlier CJP while addressing the committee said holding of elections under Election Commission (EC) was victory of the constitution.Election was a national issue and holding of polls on time fortifies the institutions, he added.He went on to say the request made by the EC and political parties for holding election under the judiciary had been placed before the committee.He thanked to political parties and EC for expressing trust on judiciary saying all political parties were respectful to him and he honored their sentiments.He remarked judiciary respected political parties and ban was imposed on making judges of subordinate judiciary part of electoral process due to allegation of rigging. The request by EC and political parties for holding election under judiciary will be contemplated, he added.The committee also reviewed the matters on dispensation of justice to common man and implementation of judicial policy besides deliberating over EC request for assigning returning officers responsibilities to judges of subordinate judiciary.
