A meeting of the National Judicial Policy Making Committee is in progress at Supreme Court’s Lahore registry with Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in chair.The session has been attended by all high court chief justices, registrars and prosecutors with the exception of the chief justice of the Peshawar High Court.Addressing the session, the chief justice said that the chief election commissioner has requested to conduct the general elections under the supervision of judiciary. The plea stated that all the political parties have shown their willingness that judiciary should supervise the elections, adding that only judicial officers should be allowed to handle the electoral process.In his initial remarks, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry thanked all political parties for expressing their confidence in the judiciary, adding thatholding of the general elections by the Election Commission is the victory of the Constitution.The chief justice said that the national judicial policy barred every judicial officer from extending his services other than the judicial matters. However, he welcomed the recommendation of holding the elections under judiciary, adding that election is a national matter and they should be conducted in the light of the constitution.He further said the Judicial Commission of Pakistan would consider the request of ECP.
