Chairman WAPDA on Friday informed a Parliamentary Panel that the contract for the extension of Tarbela Dam project would be awarded till March 31, 2013.The meeting of Senate standing committee on water and power was held here on Friday with Senator Zahid Khan in the chair and resented the absence of federal minister Ahmed Mukhtar and Acting secretary Nargis Sethi without any intimation to the committee.Committee said that an energy crisis has become severe in the country and this situation is worsening with every passing day while it seems that government wants to run this key ministry from acting officials.Senate legislative body said that due to the absence of both officials committee has postponed its agenda item regarding extension given to officers/ staff by DISCOs/ NTDC and promotion to existing employees. Body said that this key issue cannot be discussed because both responsible persons are not present.Chairman committee Senator Zahid khan expressing annoyance over the slow pace of construction work on Kurram Tangi dam said that from last three years we are emphasizing on this project but officials are using certain delaying tactics.Chairman WAPDA Syed Raghib Hussain shah informed the committee that they were working diligently on this project and this project would be completed in phases.He said that WAPDA would hold meetings with the donors of the project and finalize its methodology within fifteen days and they would inform the committee about progress over it.Standing committee directed to WAPDA that to coordinate with relevant stake holders of the project give complete road map of the project to the committee till November 05.During the meeting legislative body showed its anger over delay in construction work of Jabban hydro power project as LC for the project has not been opened so far.Chairman WAPDA assured the committee that stern action would be taken against all those officials who involved in unnecessary delay in the work.Committee asked the Chairman WAPDA to expedite work on this project and give report.Senate body asked the officials of WAPDA to give complete details of the promotions, extensions given to the employees the department and also give details that under which conditions these decisions were taken.Meanwhile, standing committee asked Chief Secretary Sindh to apprised the committee about the under construction dams in the province and inform that how much work has been completed so far and when it would be fully completed.
