Summary Former US deputy ambassador Ann Wright has termed drone attacks as illegal.
She was addressing a seminar organised by the Institute of Strategic Studies on Monday. The topic of the seminar was “Drones: A Threat to US National Security”.Ann Wright said the US government officials think it is legal to use drones against the enemy targets, however, in her opinion Drone program lacks transparency.She said that the drone strikes created hatred among the local populace.She highlighted that three independent organizations conducted surveys that nearly 2500- 3000 people have been killed including 400 to 800 civilians and 176 children in drone strikes.Wright said that for the US, anyone in beard wearing a turban and shalwar kamez is a ‘militant’, and US forces attack a person in this getup whether the person is attending his cousin funeral and has no concern with any terrorist group.The government of the US on its war policies disappoints a huge number of Americans, she claimed.In question-answer session, Ann Wright said that Pakistan had suffered huge civilian and military losses in this war on terrorism.
