Summary The country has borrowed $72 billion in last 27 years from different monetary institutions.
According to an official of Economic Affairs Division, $59 billion was loan while the remaining $13 billion were grants.However, the government’s borrowing has swelled from $5.5 trillion to $11 trillion during the last four years and during that period the government had taken $11.3 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).On regime-wise disbursement of foreign loans and grants, the official said during the former premier Junejo regime (85-88), the government had taken$4,651.300 million loans and $1,728.600 million grants, Benazir first regime (88-90) saw taking of $ 4,071.800 million loans and $1,118.400 million grants, the country was taken $6,153.200 million loans and 1,421.400 million grants and at time it was Nawaz Sharif first regime, during Benazir’s 2nd regime which span from 1993-1996 the government was taken total $8,147.800 million loans and grants, which included$7,343.200 million loans and$804.600 million in grants.The 2nd Nawaz Sharif regime(96-99) witnessed getting $7,950.300 million, which includes $7,374.400 million loans and $575.900 million grants, during Musharraf regime(99-08)the government had taken $23,013.370 million out of which $17,951.735 million was taken in loans and $5,061.636 million in grants whereas the current government has taken $14,005.237 million loans and grants in last four years out of which it has received $11,695.135 in term of loans and the remaining $2,310.103 million in grants.
