Summary

Communist Party of Pakistan has filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding that sugar mills across the countries be nationalized, Dunya News Thursday reported. The petition maintains that sugar crisis has intensified across the country. It said that 16 people including two women were killed in just one incident while mill owners paid no heed to the courts orders. Mill owners are committing contempt of court, the petition maintained. The petitioner suggested that 80 sugar mills across the countries should be nationalized to end the sugar crisis. Federal Government and all the mill owners have been nominated in the petition. Yesterday, the SC upheld the Lahore High Court (LHC) order on sugar prices. The LHC had ordered Punjab Government to bring the sugar prices at Rs 40/kg. The decision is still to be implemented across the province. Pakistan Sugar Mills Association had challenged the Lahore High Court (LHC) decision the SC. The association maintained that LHC had gone beyond its jurisdictions to fix sugar prices at Rs 40/kg. On the other hand the supply of sugar has been reduced to the market causing problems for the people who are forced to buy sugar at inflated rates. All sugar mills in Punjab have stopped functioning because they refused to bear huge losses in the business. The negotiations between the sugar mill owners and the Punjab Government also failed and the people couldnt get sugar at Rs 40 per kg as per the court orders.
