Summary

Pakistan Sugar Mills Association has challenged the Lahore High Court (LHC) decision of reducing the sugar prices in the Supreme Court (SC), Dunya News Saturday reported. On the other hand, Competition Commission has started checking the record of sugar mills. Filed under the article 188, the petition by the association maintained that LHC had gone beyond its jurisdictions to fix sugar prices at Rs 40/kg. The petition stated that it was the job of administration to fix the prices and judiciary couldnt do this. Federal Government, Punjab Government, Trading Cooperation of Pakistan, Sugar Dealers Association and others are nominated in the petition. On the other hand the supply of sugar has been reduced to the market causing problems for the people who are forced to buy sugar at inflated rates. All sugar mills in Punjab have stopped functioning because they refused to bear huge losses in the business. Earlier, LHC had rejected the sugar mill owners petition seeking the stay order on the courts earlier orders of reducing sugar prices. The mill owners afterwards decided to move the SC. The negotiations between the sugar mill owners and the Punjab Government also failed and the people couldnt get sugar at Rs 40 per kg as per the court orders.
