New judicial year marks new judges appointment

The new judicial year has begun today after the summer vacations. Total 13 judges have been appointed. Two Supreme Court (SC) judges, four Balochistan High Court (BHC) judges and seven Peshawar High Court (PHC) judges took oath with the start of the year. Addressing a ceremony in connection with the new judicial year at the SC Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary termed the November 03 actions as unconstitutional. CJP maintained that under the new code of conduct, no judge would support the unconstitutional steps taken by any dictator. CJP told that number of cases increased tremendously during the judicial crisis and many judges including him voluntarily decided to give up holidays that exist since English era. CJP revealed he disposed off 3,538 cases till August 31. He stressed that the courts must at end function within their jurisdiction. The constitution of 1973 was agreed upon by all political parties, CJP concluded. Separately, Supreme Court Bar Association President Ali Ahmad Kurd says that existing judiciary has also brought no change in the set up. The same attitude and behavior of judges from top to bottom, same as the history, Kurd believed. Addressing a new judicial years ceremony in the SC Kurd showed disappointment on current situation. What fruits the lawyers moment brought, Kurd questioned. Attorney General Latif Khosa told the ceremony that decision of July 31, had closed the SC doors on dictators forever. Justice r Wajeehuddin Ahmad exclusively told Dunya News that Kurds statement should be looked from the right perspective. There is no magic wand so as to bring a huge change right after March 09, 2009, justice maintained. He added that advancement in right direction was continued and would bring positive change. Ahmad opined that implementation on the necessary actions took some time. On the other hand, Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer said that consultation with Chief Minister was not mandatory for the judges appointment. The authority to appoint judges lies with governor, Taseer claimed.
