No one nominated to represent Pakistan at Miss Universe beauty pageant: minister

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - A day after local media outlets reported that Pakistan is being represented at a long-running beauty pageant Miss Universe for the first time in history, caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi said Wednesday the government has not nominated anyone to represent Pakistan at a beauty contest.

Media reports detailed Tuesday that “2023 is the first year when Pakistani models are being represented at the long-running beauty pageant. At least 200 contestants applied from around the globe. These applicants took part in a photoshoot in the Maldives, wearing outfits by Filipino designer Furne One whose Amato label is based in Dubai”.

“Josh Yugen, the national director of Miss Universe Pakistan excitedly shared that, "For the first time in the history of the biggest competition of its kind, one empowering woman will carry the name of Pakistan across her heart,” the reports went on to say.

According to the reports, the top five finalists included 24-year-old Erica Rabin from Karachi, 24-year-old Hira Inam from Lahore, 28-year-old Jessica Wilson from Rawalpindi, 19-year-old US-born Malika Alvi and 26-year-old Sabrina Wasim from Punjab.

Nevertheless, all the buzz surrounding the report came to an end when, caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi, while responding to a senior journalist’s question on the social media platform ‘X’, stated that “the Government and the State of Pakistan are represented by the state and government institutions. Our government has not nominated any non-state or non-governmental person or institution for any such activity, nor any such person or institution can represent the state or government”.
