LAHORE – Pakistani researcher Hafsa Gulzar has contributed to a scientific breakthrough in Poland involving the three-dimensional imaging of living egg cells, a development that could provide embryologists with more detailed information when assessing oocytes for in vitro fertilisation (IVF).

Gulzar, who hails from Mandi Bahauddin, worked with a research team associated with Jagiellonian University’s Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology and the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The team used holotomography, an advanced imaging technique, to produce three-dimensional images of living oocytes. Unlike conventional microscopic assessment, the method enables researchers to examine internal characteristics as well as metabolic and biochemical conditions while keeping the cells alive.

First application

Researchers described the work as the first application of holotomography for three-dimensional imaging of live egg cells.

The approach could give embryologists additional information about an oocyte’s developmental potential before fertilisation. IVF laboratories currently assess egg cells largely by examining visible characteristics under a microscope, but appearance alone may not provide a complete picture of a cell’s condition.

By adding objective information about metabolic and biochemical activity, the new technique could help specialists distinguish oocytes with stronger developmental prospects.

Gulzar carried out her work under the supervision of her professors as part of the wider research team. The group developed both the analytical method and a new procedure for preparing and imaging living egg cells.

Ten-minute process

According to details of the research, the procedure takes about 10 minutes, allowing scientists to obtain detailed information without destroying the oocyte during examination.

Researchers say the ability to study the internal structure and metabolism of a living egg cell could eventually support more precise assessments in embryology laboratories. Further research and clinical evaluation will be needed to establish how effectively the technique can be incorporated into routine IVF practice.

The researchers believe that better assessment of oocyte quality could potentially support the selection of cells with greater prospects for successful fertilisation, pregnancy and the birth of a healthy child.

Pakistan connection

Gulzar’s contribution has attracted attention in her native Mandi Bahauddin, where her scientific work has been welcomed as an achievement for Pakistani researchers working internationally.

She is the daughter of Gulzar Ahmed Gondal, a former senior teacher at Government Sir Syed High School.

The research has also renewed attention on the importance of supporting Pakistani scientists and strengthening opportunities for young researchers to participate in international scientific work.

The development adds to the use of advanced imaging technologies in reproductive medicine, with researchers exploring ways to obtain more comprehensive information about egg-cell quality before IVF procedures.
