Health authorities restart two hospitals in Gaza City
The Government Media Office in Gaza says health authorities have restarted partial operations at two healthcare facilities in Gaza City in the northern part of the enclave on Thursday after Israeli military attacks rendered them out of service.
The al-Ahli Arab Hospital – also called the Baptist Hospital – and the General Service Hospital are again receiving sick or wounded Palestinians, it said in a statement.
“We appreciate the great and exceptional efforts of the medical teams who have been working around the clock and have not stopped since the beginning of the genocidal war to serve our great Palestinian people.”
A Gaza journalist reported that numerous people attempting to flee Gaza City have been fatally shot by Israeli military forces.
Israeli army to present probe into Kibbutz Be’eri battle
The Israeli army will present today to Kibbutz Be’eri residents the findings of an investigation on what happened in the community in southern Israel when it was attacked by Hamas fighters on October 7, Israeli media report.
The kibbutz was one of the hardest hit as Palestinian fighters killed 126 people there, of the more than 1,100 people that were killed on that day.
One of the incidents being investigated is why an Israeli tank was ordered to shell a house where 14 civilians were being held by fighters, according to the report.
Other issues being looked into include why there were flaws in the way Israeli soldiers conducted their operation against Palestinian fighters, why an elite unit abandoned the area without being ordered to do so and why forces that reached the area did not enter the kibbutz to fight.
The results of the probe have already been presented to Army Chief Herzi Halevi.
Which countries get the biggest chunk of military aid from the US?
Israel
Since the founding of Israel in 1948, it has been the largest cumulative recipient of US foreign aid, receiving about $300bn (adjusted for inflation) in total economic and military assistance.
Roughly $220bn (74 percent) has been in the form of military aid, while the remaining $80bn (26 percent) has been economic aid.
Since 2008, Israel has received mostly military aid with economic aid accounting for less than 1 percent of total US aid to Israel.
Ukraine
Ukraine has also received a large amount of military aid from the US. Most recently, a $300m emergency military aid package was approved in March to replace depleted military stock in its continuing war with Russia.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine more than two years ago, the US Congress has approved five aid packages for the country totalling $175bn. The most recent legislation was passed in April 2024.
