Matrix Resurrections trailer reunites Neo, Trinity after 18 years
(Web Desk) – The Matrix 4 aka The Matrix Resurrections trailer has finally arrived to take us back into the world of the Matrix and reunite us with Neo and Trinity.
The fourth movie in the Matrix franchise hits theaters and HBO Max on December 22. The official site teased the trailer on Tuesday, inviting you to take the red or blue pill. Depending on your choice and the time of day, you d be treated to different footage from the sci-fi adventure.
The Matrix 4 hinted about what became of Keanu Reeves Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss Trinity in the wake of 2003 s The Matrix Revolutions. And it s all to the tune of Jefferson Airplane s White Rabbit.
The original Matrix movie came out in 1999, and the first two sequels were both released in 2003. The series involves a virtual reality constructed by a futuristic artificial intelligence to enslave humankind.
After it was debuted at CinemaCon, Warner Bros released the trailer today (September 9) after an excellent marketing stunt earlier this week where fans could watch teaser footage on the official website.
The trailer gives us the first plot details for the eagerly-awaited sequel and it seems as though both Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) have forgotten the events of the trilogy.
We see Neo going by his original name of Thomas Anderson and he tells his therapist (Neil Patrick Harris) that he s having "dreams that weren t just dreams". Thomas is taking prescription blue pills (uh-oh) and he runs into Trinity at a coffee shop, but they don t remember each other.
Luckily enough, Neo soon meets Yahya Abdul-Mateen II s character, who looks like a young Morpheus, and he gives Neo a red pill. "Time to fly," he tells Neo and it seems he goes through similar events to the first movie, such as fighting Morpheus (possibly) in a dojo.
This is a new, upgraded Neo though as the thrilling trailer shows that he can not only stop bullets, but redirect full-blown missiles to stop them from hitting him. Woah.
While the trailer doesn t confirm that Abdul-Mateen II is playing Morpheus, we do know that The Matrix Resurrections won t feature Laurence Fishburne – unless he s been keeping a major secret.
"I am not in the next Matrix movie and you d have to ask Lana Wachowski why, cause I don t have an answer for that," Fishburne said in June 2021.
The new movie does, however, bring back Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, while new cast members include Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christina Ricci and Jessica Yu Li Henwick.
We get our first look at the likes of Henwick and Groff in the trailer, but that doesn t mean we know exactly who they re playing yet. It seems Henwick is helping Neo remember who he is, but Groff could well be someone more sinister.
"After all these years to be going back to where it all started, back to the Matrix," he tells Neo. What does it mean? Who knows, but we re in.
The Matrix Resurrections is released in cinemas on December 22. It will also be available to watch on HBO Max in the US from the same day.
