Bollywood stars come out in support of farmer protests

MUMBAI (Dunya News) - Bollywood stars, from Priyanka Chopra to Preity Zinta, have spoken out in favor of Indian farmers who are protesting a new law by the Modi government that directly affects their livelihoods.

Preity Zinta called the farmers soldiers of the soil that keep India going and said her heart goes out to the farmers and their families protesting in the cold in this pandemic. Sonam Kapoor wrote that farmers are the founders of human civilization and also used the hashtag #dillichalo.

Richa Chadha tweeted that 12000 farmers commit suicide every year, which is over 30 per day, and yet, this is the biggest protest by people who put food on our plates. Actress and model Urvashi Rautela said that without farmers, we wouldn’t have access to food and other basic necessities.

Priyanka Chopra also addressed the situation, “Our farmers are India’s Food Soldiers. Their fears need to be allayed. Their hopes need to be met. As a thriving democracy, we must ensure that the crisis is resolved sooner than later.”

Retish Deshmukh said that, “if you eat today, thank a farmer. I stand in solidarity with every farmer in our country”. Last but not the least, singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh has openly advocated and participated in the sit-in to show solidarity with the farmers.
