Summary Natalia Almada brings a film about the violence of Mexico's drug war to the Cannes film festival.

The movie, El Velador (The Night Watchman) follows Martin, who night after night watches over the extravagant mausoleums of some of Mexicos most notorious drug barons.Almada focuses on the troubles in Mexico to show how ordinary lives are carried out amongst the turmoil of Mexicos bloodiest conflict since the revolution as it had claimed 37,000 lives.Almada says she was drawn to the idea of doing a documentary on the pantheon, the temples, in the narco-cemetery in northern Sinaloa state, the drug heartland of Mexico, because since the war on drugs began, the number of graves in the cemetery and the extravagance of the mausoleums has exceed what she calls the imaginable.
