(Web Desk) – The hype surrounding Virushka wedding is not ending any time soon. This time, the hysteria seems to have taken a bit of a political turn with a BJP legislator terming cricketer Virat Kohli and actor Anushka Sharma unpatriotic for not getting married in India.
In a statement on Tuesday, a local MLA Pannalal Shakya said Indian cricketer Kohli didn’t deserve to be called a youth icon because he married in Italy, reported the Hindustan Times.
The couple that recently married in Tuscany earlier this month is among India’s most popular celebrity couples with stories of their romance having made headlines for years.
“They earned money and fame in India but they didn’t find any appropriate place to marry on the land where Lord Ram got married,” Shakya was reported as saying by the HT. “They are unpatriotic for getting married abroad.”
Though the remarks did not go unnoticed and triggered a reaction from their political rivals that demanded an apology saying Shakya had no right to question the choices of individuals.
“Does the BJP leader want others to ask him to decide the venue of marriage? Who is he to comment over celebrities’ choice of place for marriage. What kind of message they want to give by insulting a celebrity who is the pride of our country?” Congress chief spokesperson KK Mishra was reported as saying by Indian media.
The HT reported that when contacted the BJP legislator stood by his comments further adding that he was disappointed with the couple.
